You want me to believe what?!

Reason is a gift of God. Reason aids us in understanding, if only partially, the beauty of God’s creation. However, if reason is misused by subjecting everything God says to our reason, it becomes an enemy of faith.

The Trinity. The virgin birth of Jesus. Jesus’ resurrection from the dead. You could fill a book with the things God says that seem so unreasonable. It’s no wonder much of the world looks at their everyday experience and rejects the miracles of the Bible as impossible. “You want me to believe what?!”

The misuse of human reason has hidden Jesus’ glory from their eyes. However, rejecting God and his Word because we cannot understand God’s reason is foolish. Proverbs 14:12 says, “There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death.”

Instead, the Bible says, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom” (Proverbs 9:10). And it says, “No one can say, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ except by the Holy Spirit” (1 Corinthians 12:3). Only when God works faith in our hearts through his Word can we truly “understand” God’s reasoning as higher than our own.

If you’re a believer, do not miss this miracle for you: you believe all these things. The Holy Spirit has spoken to your “reasonable challenges” with the power of his Word and his love. The Trinity, the virgin birth, the resurrection—you receive these things by faith because God says them, not because you can explain them. It is evidence that the Holy Spirit is with you!
