Your group and more fruit

There’s an obscure but incredible reference in the Bible to the power of doing life together with other Christians. Psalm 133 says that God’s people living together in unity “is as if the dew of Hermon were falling on Mount Zion” (verse 3).

I told you it was obscure! “Hermon” is a reference to Mt. Hermon, a towering peak north of the Sea of Galilee, which gets about 55 inches of precipitation each year (50% more than the city of Seattle). “Mount Zion” is a nickname for the city of Jerusalem, which soaks in 22 inches of rain annually. Jerusalem is not a year-round desert. During the rainy season, it turns green and produces fruit. But can you imagine how fruitful it would be if the dew of Mt. Hermon moved south and fell on Jerusalem’s hills?

What a perfect analogy for us! Like Jerusalem, you can be fruitful (patient, loving, joyful) without a group of Christians. Attending church and reading devotions at home is, without a doubt, a way that the Spirit strengthens your faith. But when you add others, when you share burdens and prayers and reminders of God’s love, you burst with life in ways that you didn’t before. A friend’s faith can increase your joy. A brother’s burden can be your chance to show more kindness and love. A sister’s confession of Jesus can restore your peace.

Do you have a group yet? If not, ask God to help you get a group and increase the fruit of your faith.
