Church size matters

By Pastor Mike Novotny

If you want to live your best church life, please don’t miss this essential truth—church size matters. The number of people who call your church their “church home” matters.

Just ask Moses. When the megachurch we call the people of Israel escaped from Egypt, Moses was single-handedly trying to pastor a metropolis worth of people. But when his father-in-law took one look at the weary look on Moses’ face and the impatient looks on Israel’s faces, he stated, “What you are doing is not good. You and these people who come to you will only wear yourselves out” (Exodus 18:17,18). Thankfully, Moses came to accept that church size matters (read the rest of Exodus 18 for the resolution).

Imagine you were a member at a church of ten people and your best friend was a member at a church of ten thousand people. Would you expect talented musicians to lead worship at each church? personal access to call the pastor whenever to talk about whatever? well-organized programs for new moms, teens, young professionals, retirees, and recovering addicts? a place where everybody knows everybody else’s name? It depends! Neither big churches nor small churches are better according to the Bible, but it is important for you to know what kind of church you are.

Your Father in heaven wants you to have a great spiritual life. By thinking through the size of your church (with all its pros and cons), you will be one step closer to loving the church you call home.
