God & transgender (Part 1)

By Pastor Mike Novotny

How should Christians approach their transgender questions? When we (or someone we love) feel a disconnect between our brains and our biological bodies, what does God want us to do? Let’s tackle those questions in a series of devotions over the next few days.

The best place to start with questions about transgender is the book of Genesis. “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. God blessed them and said to them, ‘Be fruitful and increase in number’” (1:27,28). In these words, God connects gender and biological sex, a truth Jesus later referred to in his famous words about marriage (Matthew 19:4). A male and a female, by God’s definition, are two people who are able to “be fruitful and increase in number.” Biological sex was not assigned at birth by a doctor but assigned by God, with gender intimately connected to it. And when our Father looked at his binary children, male and female, he said, “That’s so good!” (Genesis 1:31).

So, why isn’t it always good? Why do we deal with nonbinary feelings, unique situations (like intersex people), infertility, and countless other struggles with our bodies? If God made us male and female (and if God doesn’t make mistakes), why do God-fearing people feel such a disconnect between the desires of their minds and the design of Genesis chapter 1?

We’ll tackle those questions in tomorrow’s devotion.
