Hungry for the right stuff

By Katrina Harrmann

One night my son ate the following over a span of 5 hours: 2 cookies, 2 bowls of chicken pasta, chocolate milk, 24 wontons, 2 hamburgers, a pickle, a milkshake, and a bowl of cereal. It was like watching The Very Hungry Caterpillar in real time!

He laughs when we joke about his “hollow leg,” which is a completely normal thing for a healthy, active, growing teenage boy. (Boy, do they eat!)

But it made me think about how sometimes in life we ingest unhealthy combinations of consumables that AREN’T food: the movies we watch, the company we keep, the habits we form, the books we read, the mindless scrolling on our phones. We ingest and consume and devour, and it isn’t all good and healthy stuff.

And we’re all guilty.

It’s easy to ingest too much junk, isn’t it? Especially in this day and age with information at our fingertips designed to feed and encourage any and all habits, views, and lifestyles. The devil makes it even easier, telling us it’s no big deal. But we blink, and all of a sudden we’ve strayed so far that we can’t see our safe harbor and are in danger of drowning.

So keep an eye on what you consume! Milkshakes and pickles may be okay, but what you devote your THOUGHTS and most of all your HEART to is most important! Seek God in these moments!

“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it” (Proverbs 4:23).
