Let’s bring back Easter

By Pastor Mike Novotny

I feel bad for Easter. They say that Christmas and Easter are the two biggest days for Christianity, but compared to Christmas, Easter is pretty missable. When’s the last time you had an office Easter party? or fought for a parking spot at the mall on Easter weekend? or argued about whether you could play Easter music after St. Patrick’s Day? Every pop artist from Elvis to the Pentatonix puts out a Christmas album, but zero stars are dropping hits about the empty tomb. Easter is pretty missable.

But not in the Bible. Recently, I copied and pasted all the passages about Jesus’ birth, and my computer’s word counter told me that they added up to 633 words. When I did the same with the Easter story, I got 986 words … in just the book of Luke! Add Matthew, Mark, John, and Paul’s resurrection chapter to the Corinthians, and you end up with 3,575 words! The Bible seems to be begging us: “Don’t miss Easter!”

At Easter, death was knocked out. At Easter, your sins were verified as fully forgiven. At Easter, Jesus proved to the world who he truly is—God in human flesh. No wonder when Jesus appeared to John in the final book of the Bible, he said, “I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever!” (Revelation 1:18).

Don’t miss Easter. The empty tomb is history’s best news ever.
