Immortal until God’s time

By Pastor Nathan Nass

I get anxious about the future. Do you? I worry about all the things that could happen to me or my loved ones. Do you? There’s so much we don’t know. There’s so much we don’t control.

So I was encouraged by what an old pastor used to say: “I am immortal until my work is finished.” Do you know what he meant? You cannot die until God’s work for you is complete. I cannot die until God’s purpose for my life has been fulfilled. You and I are immortal until God’s time.

That isn’t just an old pastor’s saying. It’s the truth from God’s Word: “All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be” (Psalm 139:16). Even before we were born, our loving God had already written down in his book how each of our days was going to go.

That doesn’t mean life will be easy. That doesn’t mean you’ll live to a ripe, old age. Life might be hard. It might be shorter than you expect. You might face hunger or sickness or accident or war. But through it all, you can be confident of this: no one can change what God has ordained for you.

Even when that last day comes, you still won’t have to worry. Because through Jesus, your last day is really just your first day of immortality in heaven. So live with confidence! You’re immortal.
