I’m an average-sized person, but when I use a pool towel at one of those “budget friendly” hotels, I have to wonder if the staff gave me a washcloth by mistake. It barely covers one hip! It takes at least four minimalist towelettes to provide any real coverage, and that requires the use of both my hands and some creative tucking.
I am so glad God doesn’t bestow forgiveness the way stingy hotels dole out pool towels. When I attempt to conceal my sin, it’s even less effective than a washcloth trying to hide an adult human body. However, God’s robe of righteousness—won with the blood of his Son, Jesus—covers me from head to toe.
King David wrote, “Blessed is the one whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered” (Psalm 32:1). David knew a thing or two about trying to hide sins. He tried to keep his affair with Bathsheba and the murder of her husband under wraps, and the secret nearly killed him. “When I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night your hand was heavy on me; my strength was sapped as in the heat of summer” (verses 3,4). When the prophet Nathan confronted David with his sin, David confessed, and he couldn’t contain his relief.
Exposing your sins can be scary. You might feel naked and vulnerable. Forget trying to cover up your sins yourself. Jesus is here to wrap you in the luxurious robe of his righteousness.
