War is a devastating force, leaving trails of destruction and heartache. Yet, amidst the turmoil and suffering, there are threads of hope and redemption woven by God’s sovereign hand. A remarkable encounter in Appleton, Wisconsin, reminds us of the unexpected ways God can work through trials to spread His love and salvation.
A Surprising Encounter in Appleton
Last Christmas, a man from Afghanistan found his way to our church in Appleton, Wisconsin. His presence was striking, not only because of his traditional Afghan attire but because his journey here was marked by the shadows of war. Having worked with the U.S. government, he feared for his life and his family’s safety under the Taliban’s threat. This fear compelled him to flee, leading him to a place vastly different from his homeland.
As I got to know him, my heart broke for the immense sacrifices he made. He left behind friends, family, and the familiarity of his culture, facing the daunting challenge of adapting to a new language and lifestyle. His wife, pregnant and isolated, struggled even more due to the language barrier. War had stripped away so much from them, yet they found a new community and unexpected support in Appleton.
The Gospel in the Midst of Conflict
In the face of war’s relentless devastation, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. But then, Jesus’ words in Matthew 24 come to mind: “There will be wars and rumors of wars… but the gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world.” This promise echoes through history, reminding us that God’s purposes prevail even in the darkest times.
The Bible is replete with stories of God using adversity to spread His message. Ruth, a Moabite woman, encountered the God of Israel through hardship and loss, eventually becoming an ancestor of King David and, ultimately, Jesus. In the New Testament, Saul’s persecution led to the scattering of believers, which propelled the gospel beyond its initial borders.
God’s Sovereign Plan
As we witness conflicts like those between Russia and Ukraine or any future wars, we must hold onto the truth that God is at work. People uprooted from their homes might find themselves in places where they encounter the gospel for the first time. This movement, though born of suffering, can lead to spiritual transformation and the spread of God’s love.
Reflecting on my Afghan friend, I am reminded of the power of the gospel to transcend cultural and linguistic barriers. Before delivering gifts to him, I discovered a copy of the Gospel of John in his native language. It was an opportunity to share the profound message of God’s love and the promise of eternal life through Jesus Christ.
Finding Hope in Troubled Times
As believers, we need not be alarmed by the tumult of wars. God is not absent in these situations; rather, He is turning what seems like chaos into opportunities for His kingdom to grow. Just as He took the ultimate act of human evil at the cross and redeemed it for our salvation, He continues to work for good amidst human conflict.
In this world, we may face trouble, but we can take heart, for Jesus has overcome the world. Let us remain steadfast, trusting in His sovereignty and the unstoppable spread of His gospel across all nations. Through every trial and tribulation, God’s love prevails, offering hope and peace to all who seek Him.
