The penalty is paid

By Pastor Clark Schultz

OK, so I admit that I watched the trial of Johnny Depp vs. Amber Heard. This couple who was once in love slung mud at each other day after day. Witness after witness came forward, each supporting a side of the story. Text messages, decades-old but spanning their relationship, were drudged up and read publicly.

This got me thinking of my own emails and text messages from this past week or even farther into the past. Would I give a lawyer full cooperation and say, “Yes, please read all of them out loud”? Or would I cower and cringe and make excuses for the venom that spewed from my fingers?

“What does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8). I haven’t always been truthful. I haven’t always been kind. I don’t always act justly. In the courtroom of my life, I stand guilty.

Yet even though I fall short at times, Jesus never did. He always showed kindness. He always showed love. He even prayed for those who drove the nails into his hands and feet. He lived, died, and rose for me and you. Jesus the Suffering Servant put our sins on himself and happily served instead of being served. Because of him, court is over; the penalty of our sins has been paid in full. God sees us all as not guilty through Jesus!
