Why are you worthy?

By Pastor Mike Novotny

The other day I was meditating on these words of Jesus: “Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows” (Luke 12:7). Curious, I opened up Google images (the website that has all the pictures) and typed in “worthy.” Instantly, my screen was filled with two very distinct types of images. Want to guess what they were?

The first images were all about how worthy we humans all are. Pinterest posts declared to every reader, “You are strong. You are brave. You are worthy.” However, my dictionary says that the word worthy means, “good, virtuous, moral, ethical, honest, blameless, guiltless, righteous.” Does that really apply to all of us? to any of us? While I appreciate the self-esteem booster, the definition of worthy disqualifies me from claiming to be it.

Which is why I loved the other type of image I saw: “God is worthy. Jesus is worthy. Worthy is the Lamb who was slain.” These biblical quotes turned my eyes toward Jesus, the only good, virtuous, moral, ethical, honest, blameless, guiltless, righteous person to ever walk this earth. He is the Lamb who laid down his life to prove just how worthy he is.

By God’s grace, that worthy Savior has given us worth. By taking away our sins and giving us his worthiness, Christians can dare to say, “I am worthy! Through Jesus, I am worth more than many sparrows to our Father!”

Repeat it. Believe it. In Christ, you are worthy!
