Have you fallen victim to the lie that trusting in God is for those who can’t make it on their own? Do you ever think God might get tired of hearing you pour out your grief to him or that he doesn’t pay attention or care?
Take this exquisite image from Psalm 56 and hold it in your mind and heart: “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I shall not be afraid. What can flesh do to me? You have kept count of my tossings; put my tears in your bottle. Are they not in your book?” (verses 3,4,8 ESV).
Your Lord sees, knows, and cares about every circumstance of your life. Your God sees, cares, and knows you, down to the freckles on your face and the joys and griefs that permeate your bones. Your heart is an open book to him. His face shines with love for you. When you cry, or even wish to be able to cry tears of grief or anguish or frustration, he is not only aware of your tears, but he keeps count of your anguished tossings and tears. He puts them in a safe place and records them as important and noteworthy. He sees; he hears; he helps.
The psalmist closes this picture of our loving God with this testimony: “You have delivered my soul from death, yes, my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of life” (verse 13 ESV).
