God’s Word to married women

By Pastor Mike Novotny

I recently typed wife and married and marriage into a Bible search engine, and what I discovered were the “7 Commandments for Christian Wives.” If you’re a married woman (or know one who needs some encouragement), here’s what our Father says to wives: “Respect [your husband] (Ephesians 5:33). “Love [your husband] (Titus 2:4). “Be subject to [your husband] (Titus 2:5). “Submit” (Colossians 3:18). “Submit” (1 Peter 3:1). “Submit” (Ephesians 5:22). “Submit” (Ephesians 5:24).

Quite the list, huh? I know that many sinful men have weaponized these words for their selfish gain, so let me say two things. First, this is God’s list. Those words weren’t copied and pasted from The Patriarchy Club’s “About Us” page. They came from the same God who gave you life and then gave you his Son so you could have eternal life. Read each command; then, in light of its trustworthy source, receive it with an open heart.

Second, seek to be a submissive wife. Just as Jesus submitted to his Father, out of love and respect for his will, your holy calling is to be like Jesus. After you have shared your heart and your mind like Jesus did with his Father, be willing to say with Jesus, “Not my will but yours be done.”

When you fall short, run back to Jesus for mercy. When you need help, call on the Spirit for wisdom and your friends for encouragement. That’s how you can do your part in creating a happier, holier home.
