There’s a story about a man who waited on the roof of his house during a flood. The waters kept rising, and he waited so long that he drowned. This happened after a boat, a helicopter, and more tried to save him, but he refused each attempt, saying, “I’m waiting for a sign from God.”

Once in heaven, the man questioned God, “Why didn’t you save me?”

God replied, “I sent a boat, a helicopter, and …”

Psalm 119:18 says, “Open my eyes that I may see.” What signs are you and I ignoring? A friend confides in you that his marriage is in danger of unfaithfulness, and yet he goes right back to texting/meeting that non-spouse for the thrill. The near sideswipe of a car on a snowy road jump-starts your heart, but within two miles or less you’re back to texting and driving. The promiscuous couple at school flaunt their ways, and soon a pregnancy is announced.

The problem with wake-up calls is NOT the call; it’s when we ignore or hit snooze on them, thinking they aren’t meant for us. We can laugh about the guy on the roof, but we are no different. If you’re reading this and you’ve erred, take comfort that God has forgiven you. If you are a person who needs a wake-up call, listen to the sound advice from the family and friends God has put in your life. Finally, God bless those who do get us to open our eyes and turn to Jesus.
