When we gather in church to worship, we are worshiping the Creator-God. He’s the MVP, the One and Only, the triune God who deserves our best and our respect.
But sometimes when we worship, we’re far from our best. Perhaps we go into a tailspin if a new hymn is played or the baptismal font is moved 1/8 of an inch out of place. Defiance captures our hearts over something different. Perhaps church is too crowded or not crowded enough, and that leads to grumbling over numbers. Maybe the pastor’s sermon hits close as he calls out a pet sin, and resentment takes the place of respect.
Depending on your stage in life, does the mention of eternity comfort, bore, or even make you afraid? Psalm 111reminds us to simply“praise the Lord” (verse 1).The psalmist reminds us of all God’s blessings to us.
Heart-check time: Stop and think of all the blessings God has given you. Also answer this question: Is worship something you do for God or something God does for you? You and I have freedom to worship our awesome God. In church we have a place to worship him. We have a Savior who died for all our sins and gives us peace that they are forgiven. Jesus tells us he is with us always and will be with us when we are welcomed home into his loving arms. Now that’s a reason to worship! Praise the Lord!
