I’m a lot like my dog

By Linda Buxa
I'm a lot like my dog

My husband and I took our black lab, Jack, with us on a recent vacation. Though Jack loved the activity and attention, he was also a hot mess. Even though he was with his people (he got to see two-thirds of the kids!), Jack wasn’t comfortable because he wasn’t home, which is his favorite place. Plus, without the ability to reason, he didn’t know we wouldn’t leave him behind, no matter how much we promised.

I bet you know where this is going, but if you don’t, let me be clear: I’m a lot like Jack—and maybe you are too. I’m surrounded by blessings—family, friends, my dog, church, volunteering, work, vacations—and yet I’m wistful because I’m not Home (with a capital H). Even though this world is a beautiful gift from God, it’s not my forever home, and I am not comfortable.

Even with the ability to reason and no matter how often I hear, “The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged” (Deuteronomy 31:8), I get afraid and discouraged and forget he is always with me. I forget that Jesus is preparing my place right now and will come back for me.

That’s why I’m thankful that God sent the Holy Spirit, who Jesus promised “will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you” (John 14:26).

Thankfully the Holy Spirit will teach this old dog new tricks.
