Merry dictionary Christmas!

As a pastor, I get concerned every time December rolls around. It’s not the presents and the busyness and the Santa dilemma that worry me the most; it’s the words.

I’m worried that we’ve lost the meaning of four of the Bible’s best words—hope, peace, joy, and love. Have you ever noticed how some combination of that quartet shows up in every Christmas card, Christmas ad, and Christmas letter, and yet we rarely slow down and define them? The result is, like a phone that has been unplugged from the outlet for days, those words lose their power, no longer able to bless us in the ways God wants.

Could you give a simple definition to those words if I put you on the spot? If not, can I encourage you to add a dictionary to your holiday reading list? Imitate the attitude and the action of the Ethiopian who admitted, “‘How can I [understand what I’m reading],’ he said, ‘unless someone explains it to me?’” (Acts 8:31).

This year, take time to plug four of God’s favorite words back into their biblical meanings. If you do, you might just find your life filled with more hope (a for-sure future), more peace (a warless, unity-filled relationship with God), more joy (happiness that isn’t based on happenings), and more love (doing what’s best for another, like God did for us).

Have a merry dictionary Christmas!
