God doesn’t care (and that’s good news!)

By Pastor Mike Novotny

Does God want you to rent an apartment or buy a house? Does he prefer you stay at your current job or look for a new one? Is his will that you retire at 65 or 75? There are a thousand questions that fall into this same category, that is, personal decisions the Bible doesn’t exactly tell you how to make. I know people who agonize over these moments, asking, “Pastor, what does God want me to do?”

Here’s the odd but comforting answer—God doesn’t care! He’s cool either way. He won’t be mad if you choose A or B. While I know you would love some inside scoop on the will of God, there isn’t one. And that is really good news. That means you don’t have to sit and nervously wonder if God is mad at you for not purchasing a home/having another kid/etc. You can live with the confidence that God is with you, God is for you, and God has great plans to bless you. Our perfect Father will be with you, whatever path you choose.

I love the simple words of Moses: “The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of this law” (Deuteronomy 29:29). What belongs to us—our business and focus—isn’t some secret plan in God’s head but rather the words he has revealed in the Bible. Pay attention to them, and you’ll know exactly what God cares about.
